Yesterday was a truly special day—I had the pleasure of meeting Mafer and Luis, the passionate makers behind my all-time favorite chocolate bar. All the way from Ecuador, they took the time to visit our shop, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!
For almost eight years, the cardamom chocolate from Kuná has been my absolute favorite. The balance of flavors is simply perfect—the rich Ecuadorian chocolate, the warmth of cardamom, and just the right touch of salt. It’s no surprise that I talk about it so much that -at the time of writing- we’ve completely sold out! Now, we eagerly await our next shipment from Ecuador to restock these delicious bars.
The Story Behind Kuná Chocolate
Kuná is more than just incredible chocolate—it’s a brand deeply rooted in sustainability and ethical sourcing. They work closely with indigenous communities in Ecuador, ensuring more than fair trade practices and supporting local farmers. Their cacao is sourced from the Kichwa community of Puerto Limón, where the farmers cultivate 100% organic, heirloom Arriba Nacional cacao, one of the finest varieties in the world.

Kuná believes in preserving traditional cacao farming methods while also fostering innovation in flavor and quality. Their chocolates are certified organic and fair trade, and they are committed to maintaining Ecuador’s rich biodiversity. This philosophy shines through in every bar they create, bringing an authentic taste of Ecuadorian heritage to chocolate lovers worldwide.
Also, Kuná chocolate is made in a complete allergen-free environment. So it's safe to eat for people with heavy allergies.

An Inspiring Conversation
A few years ago, I had the chance to interview Mafer (MarÃa Andrade). She shared insights about her journey, the brand’s mission, and the challenges of running a sustainable chocolate company. She is deeply passionate about empowering local cacao farmers and maintaining ethical and eco-friendly production standards. A huge thank you to Mafer and Luis for visiting—it was an honor to meet the people behind the chocolate I love so much. And to all fellow chocolate lovers, stay tuned: the next batch of Kuná Cardamom Chocolate is on its way!
